The Safety Clinic is designed to promote driving safety for new drivers and for those who may be interested in learning more about what makes a good diving horse, fitting and care of the harness, and selecting a horse-drawn vehicle. This popular clinic also offers hands-on driving lessons.

Results: The 2011 DDC Safety Clinic was a great success. Event chairperson Debi Radtke reported that there were 24 participants and 6 auditors. Carol Pasbrig handled registration, Dana Houk and Marge Gettelman prepared the meal that Debi had planned. Jo-Anne Archambault, DMV, from Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital, spoke about the horse's health, Todd Frey, owner of Frey Carriages, showed different types of carriages and their uses, Sharon Makurat talked about safety equipment and proper use of the whip, Loren Gettelman explained the different types of harness and demonstrated harnessing a horse, and Wes Licht talked about chosing the driving horse. An excellent hot lunch was appreciated on this cool and windy day. Then participants were paired with mentors and each person was able to try their hand at driving. Mentors were Debi Radtke, Loren Gettelman, Roger Houk, Sara Licht, Linda Schutte, and Wes Licht who brought his pair of Morab mares. Photos were taken by Jane Licht.
