Gettelman residence

The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. by President Donna Crossman.  Marilyn Radtke moved to approve the Secretary's Report, Crossman seconded.

Marilyn Radtke gave the Treasurer's Report.  There is $1607.79 in the checkbook/savings, $8534.24 in CDs, for a total of $10,142.03.  Licht moved to approve, Gettelman 2nd.  MC.

Old Business:

Safety Clinic - Crossman reported for Donna Thomas that expenses were $1366.97, and income was $1067.00.   Participant numbers were down.  There was an advertisement in the March issue of the Wisconsin Horseman's News, but not in the April Horseman's News, maybe we should advertise in both issues.  Skip the ad in WSHC newsletter.  Crossman will ask Donna Thomas for numbers of participants.

Silver Anniversary Committee - Roger Houk brought the pins he had made for the 25th.  We will sell them for a little bit of profit.  Marge Gettelman has anniversary stuff, too.  Celebration will be Oct. 5 at Didier's.  Maybe have grill cookout at Donald Park.  Bring your own meat.

Drives - Roger Houk distributed a sheet with dates confirmed.

  • Gave report on Ottawa. Not a lot of people turned out. Nice day anyway.
  • Talked about new members that came to the drives, always nice to see them.
  • Myrna will write an article for the newsletter about encouraging informal "neighborhood" drives.

Newsletter Report - Licht reported on the highlights of the Coachman.  The first two editions were mailed to 160 and 170 families at a cost of about $300 each.  The September newsletter deadline is August 30.  Will include new features such as "Members Out & About", Website Resources, and "Tips of the Trade".

Website Report - Licht reported on recent updates to the website.  May minutes were added.  There are updated sections on the Midwest Horse Fair Booth, the Safety Clinic, and the Blackhawk Drive.  Added a section on the proposed bylaw changes and fee schedule.  Added a "Members Out & About" section, which was suggested by Nancy Nelson.  Activity for classified ads is strong.

Donation to Three Gaits  - Gettelman proposed and moved to send $100 to Three Gaits Therapeutic Riding Stable as thank you for supporting the driving classes at their fundraiser show.  Licht added that there were 33 turnouts for the two days of show, 2nd Licht. MC.  Radtke to take care of sending the check and correspondence.

Postcard from non-renewing members - Nancy Nelson had sent out a postcard to non-renewing members asking for their help in determining why they did not renew.  We have not received any responses.

New Business:

Young Drivers Camp - Susie Koos Acker discussed the challenges for scheduling the YDC.  The rescheduling of the Columbus Carriage Classic prompted the canceling of the YDC for this year.  Since the Board desires to try to hold the YDC in June, we will be looking for a place that can accommodate our criteria - space to trailer-in horses and keep them there, two nights of stabling, indoor arena big enough to drive in, big outdoor or flat grassy for cones/obstacles, classroom, cost is a factor, parents and kids need to make a commitment.  We are not catering to beginning drivers.  The number of kids is dependent upon number of horses, no more than 2 to 1.  Possibilities include the Wild Wind Equine Center, Waukesha.  There is room for camping, bathrooms in barn.  Trails for driving.  We need to nail down a place this year for next year.  Radtke will scout out Wild Wind.  Myrna to check out Susie Weiss' Domino Stables in Baraboo.  Acker asked for committee of DDC members to work on this, find a location, and pick a date.  We need a person to write an article for the Coachman.

2009 Midwest Horse Fair - Radtke will send in the deposit.  Licht moved to have a booth, Houk 2nd. MC

2009 Safety Clinic location - insurance is already in, we can change the location for insurance if we need to.  Gettelman will look in the Eastern Wisconsin area for suitable arenas.  Donna Thomas is looking for another organizer for the Clinic.

2009 clinic - we will focus on YDC for 2009, there is an idea about rotating a Safety Clinic, an "Advanced" clinic, and the Youth clinic.  Will support the Haflingers Of Wisconsin clinic monetarily, we don't want to supply manpower as we want to do YDC well.

Loren to write article for the Coachman about Trail Drive Safety.

Radtke to retire from Treasurer.  We need to find a new Treasurer.

Meeting adjourned at 9:04 p.m.

Next meeting will be at Radtke's, Sept. 9th at 6:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Myrna Rhinehart, Secretary
